Logging on to take virtual yoga classes from your home may have been a big change in your practice you hadn't planned for. And practicing yoga in a studio definitely has its advantages; a dedicated space, a defined schedule, community, and a sense of environment. Being at home can have its own set of advantages too! Here's some ideas to help you recreate some studio elements and some only-at-home bonuses you can use to enhance and customize your home practice.
Setting up your space
If you have a designated yoga spot in your home, that's great! But if not, don't despair. There are still plenty of ways you can make the space you do have feel a little more sacred. Try to set aside about 10-15 minutes before class begins (there's no commute!) to help yourself shift into practice mode.
Declutter the area around your mat to minimize distractions
Light a candle or your favorite incense, or diffuse essential oils
Set up a mini altar near your mat with items meaningful to you
Pull a card from a tarot or oracle deck
Read a passage from a spiritual book
Listen to a favorite song
Spend a few minutes journaling or sketching
Relax in savasana
Enjoy your favorite tea
During your practice
Here's a few ideas for optimizing your at-home comfort.
If you can, practice in a room alone, and talk to housemates or family members if you need to let them know you'd like some undisturbed time.
If a separate space is not available, consider investing in a pair of wireless bluetooth sport earbuds.
When the weather allows, practice in an outdoor space to change things up
If you have a pet who likes to be near you at all times, bring their favorite blanket or pet bed close to your mat so they can be by your side but not in the way!
Get comfy with lots of props. Household objects like pillows, cushions, blankets, and even beach towels make great props in any class.
If your teacher is not playing music, choose your own music to match your mood. If you're not sure what you want to listen to, search YouTube or a streaming service for yoga playlists.
Adjust the lighting however you prefer.
Wear whatever is comfortable, and turn off your camera if you don't feel like being seen.
Super savasana
Use as many props and take up as much space as you want to. Pillows, blankets, eye pillow or mask, stuffed animals; anything that brings you comfort.
If you have extra time, mute the teacher or leave the meeting to stay in savasana as long as you want.
Play your own favorite meditation music or guided meditation.
Even if you're not used to practicing yoga at home I hope you'll give some of these tips a try to create a meaningful, well-rounded, and nurturing experience for yourself!
